Welcome to Snappy Tatter-land!

I am an Artist and Shuttle-Tatted Lace designer. My fiber art designs are handmade and original, created in my home studio in West Virginia. I am a camper, tea drinker, and pet lover, taking life one day at a time.

This is my little space in the world to showcase my designs and my art, talk about the joys of creating, and the people and activities that amuse me.

New Garden Watch has made it to my shop!

Welcome to Snappy Tatter-land, where I post new works and talk about the things that make me happy. Today I want to introduce you to my latest JJ Chic Couture Garden Watch X (Roman numeral 10). I created the base of the band with tatted rings in charcoal cordonnet edged with silver. An olive-green vine with medium green leaves weaves its way along the band. It crosses the watch face with wavy half hitch knots securing the face to the band. I hand shuttle tatted many flowers for this band. I wanted the appearance of a full and glittery garden of teeny blossoms. I used a variegated pink to lavender thread for the flowers. They are simple rings with Czech glass beads in all the picots. Perfect Swarovski crystal pearls in white and lavender embellish the centers of the flowers. There is one tiny pink Swarovski crystal butterfly among the flowers. The entire tatted lace design is handsewn to olive green organdy ribbon that is finished with Sterling plated jewelry components. The entire watchband measures 6.75″ long x 0.75″ wide. It will come in an elegant watch box. Also-the battery is accessible by moving the leaf off the watch knob and then pulling the lace slightly away from the back to remove the back plate.

You can find all available watches in my JJ Chic Couture collection. Past watches I have made can be found in the Tatted Garden Watches gallery on this site.

Snappy Tatter watches are one-of-a-kind, meticulously hand crafted, and only found in my Etsy shop or in person at local show.

Labor Day Weekend Sale!

Snappy Tatter is having a sale till 9/6/21! FREE SHIPPING on all domestic US orders. Minimum order of 3 items. The discount will be applied at checkout in my Etsy shop!

Thought I would take a moment to showcase my latest J Kohr Couture design, Garden Watch IX. It sold within a day of being listed but there will be more coming soon.

I have made 10 watches so far. This one was a real treat to design. The watch face is extra large at 2″ wide. It is an antique Betsy Johnson watch I found at a garage sale. I love the rose gold flowers on the face and the bright pink embellishments of the second hand and side button. I tried to coordinate my design with these features.

The base tatting is a split ring design attached directly to the face. It is edged on both sides with a variegated cordonnet that transitions from brown to green to blue. The edging also has matte olive colored seed beads. The vine of small leaves that weaves its way along the band and side of the face also has matte seed beads. It is permanently attached to the side of the face as well. The flowers in dark pink, purple and lavender, are embellished with clear and Aurora Borealis Swarovski Crystals that are 2mm and 3mm in size. The purple flowers also have pink bugle beads tatted into their design. A final little surprise on this band is the bright red PIXIE Butterfly with a yellow Swarovski Crystal center. She is permanently affixed to the watch face.

All of the tatting is mounted on a light leaf green cotton band and secured with hand sewing and an industrial resin. All flowers are stiffened and waterproofed. Metal jewelry components that match the band and face are added along with an extension chain and lobster clasp for a secure fit. A new battery was added before I packaged it in a white box and shipped the watch. There is access to the back of the watch face to change the battery.

I hope you love it! I will make new Garden Watches soon. They are very labor intensive and the perfect one-of-a-kind accessory. This is something you won’t find anywhere but Snappy Tatter!

Come shop the sale! Buy whatever you like and forget the shipping costs. Sale will end at the end of the day on 9/6.

A relaxing day in the sunshine…with Emgality

Beech Fork Lake

I suffer from Intractable Cluster Headache Syndrome (Trigeminal Autonomic Cephalalgia). I have had this illness for four decades. It is a very rare and extraordinarily painful condition. My faulty hypothalamus causes the blood vessels in my brain to swell and squeeze the fifth branch of the trigeminal nerve. This causes multiple attacks each day of excruciating facial pain around and in one eye. Imagine an ice pick boring through your temple and a finger pushing your eye out from the inside while the back of your head is hit with a blast of a shotgun. All on one side of the head. My eyelid droops and tears up. My nose runs and gets clogged. My tooth feels like it is falling out. My temple and around my eye swells and turns red and my face droops on one side like a stroke. I find it difficult to speak, my digestion often stops, and I have to rock in my chair because laying down makes the pain even worse.

To treat it, I am on a preventative that helps ease pain and number of attacks each day. I take an injection and hyperventilate on 100% oxygen to constrict the blood vessels around my brain. I use lidocaine on my temples, straight liquid capsaicin in my nostril, melatonin to stop nighttime attacks, and Boswellia Serrata to reduce overall inflammation.

Cluster Headaches are also called “suicide headaches” because people have killed themselves to escape its wrath. I belong to a small support group on Facebook. One year we lost 14 members to suicide. The pain and incessant attacks are just that bad. It is known to be the most painful condition known to medical science, worse than natural childbirth, burns, and broken bones.

Recently, I began a new treatment. The first of its kind that is for my specific illness. It is a once a month set of three 100mg shots called Emgality. It is also for chronic migraines, a very different illness that is much more common. Migraines effect about 13% of the population while CH (Cluster Headaches) affects about 0.1% of the population. In my lifetime I have only met 2 other sufferers in person, one of which is the doctor who diagnosed me.

I took my first shots of Emgality on July 26th. At first, I struggled with the same amount and intensity of attacks but the timing of them was off. CH attacks tend to occur in a cycle around the same time of day depending on the month and time of year. After about 7 days my attacks became fewer and less intense and more easily treated. Up until the 16th of August I was having only one or two attacks, some of which were so mild and brief I did not need medication. This was a huge change from 4-5 painful attacks a day. On the 12th I had NO attacks at all for the first time in about 3 years. From the 16th to the 21st I was struck with 5 attacks a day…all were excruciating and difficult to get under control, especially in the evening. I cried A LOT. Now I am back to enjoying more pain free time and easily treated attacks.

On Friday night as I suffered through the evening I told Jay come hell or high water I want to go out kayaking tomorrow afternoon. And I meant it. I needed the relief and some sunshine after spending the week sick and inside. We recently bought inflatable kayaks and all the gear necessary to enjoy the local lakes and streams. We went to Beech Fork Lake and settled in. Jay fell in the water trying to get on his kayak giving me belly laughs! We paddled around the quiet lake enjoying the warm sunshine and wildlife. It was heavenly for me. I was so relaxed. I got an attack and treated it while in the middle of the lake. I just floated around till it eased. We had to paddle in because more attacks were to come. Overall, I enjoyed myself immensely, got some exercise and got out of the house.

I have my next round of Emgality shots on the 27th. I am hoping to have an easier month but the medication doesn’t reach its full effect till month three. So you have had a little look into my life and the condition that disables me. I pray I am like some of my support group fellows and have complete relief some day. With this illness I have learned to live between the pain. I cherish the times that my head is as clear as a bell in between attacks. Some days are better than others. Sometimes I just have to take the day off. But no matter what I try to live a life worth living as an artist, a wife and a friend. We all have hurdles to overcome but life was meant to be lived with purpose and love and I try to fulfill that everyday.

I hope you share this post…there are sufferers out there that do not know there is a solution to this rare disease.

In my next post, I will showcase my newest works!

Bracelets, bracelets, bracelets and NEW Cube Cuff

I was busy making new jewelry when I was struck with pneumonia recently! I was laid up for a couple of weeks but am doing much better now. I am sore from withdrawing from steroids though. My skin feels like it is bruised all over. Anyhoo-I found the time to get down to my huge studio and take pictures of the bracelets I finished a few weeks ago with my new lighting system. My photos are turning out perfectly with little editing needed. It saves so much time to get the photos right the first time.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/1042413629

Introducing the NEW Cube Cuff! Shuttle tatted in light blue and a variegated cordonnet that transitions from blues to greens, this design is simple but labor intensive to create. Rings and chains make repeating squares and an outside edge chain adds stability so the shape will be retained perfectly. I also hand beaded rows of tiny green Aurora Borealis coated seed beads between the cubes for a subtle sparkle. Shuttle-tatting is s knotted lace technique that is very durable making this cuff wearable for years. You can find this beautiful cuff in my Etsy shop through the link under the photo.

And there’s more! I completed 5 more bracelets and they are available in my Etsy shop now. First I have a new version of the Chantilly cuff available in charcoal gray with a large Hematite accent bead. Chantilly is one of the first designs I created years ago. It has been sold many times over since the beginning. I wear one in black with no beads.

www.https://www.etsy.com/listing/1041923119

Another early design that I have made over an over is called Effervescence. I made one in soft shell pink with glass beads. I love the color! Delicate looking but every bit as durable as any lacework I make.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/1028208008

AND Obsession is the third wide cuff design I created years ago. Currently it is available in 3 listings in my shop. There is a black one with Hematite beading, a charcoal gray one with Hematite tubes shown below and there is a custom listing where you can choose your favorite color and length.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/1027959406

I have made a new Halo bracelet with smaller rings and 4mm glass pearls in silver. It’s a modest and simple design. I can totally see a bride or bridesmaid wearing this for the bride’s special day. I always welcome bridal work and have created custom designs for bride’s, bridesmaids and mothers of the bride or groom. I have made ornate sets of jewelry for the whole party and have made simple earrings or a bracelet for a one-of-a-kind accessory.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/1041926797

Finally, another new design has been created. I made one in charcoal for my BFF’s birthday. And then I recreated it with fewer beads in go-with-everthing navy. The glass beads are matte with shiny matching seed beads between. It is called “Elegant Infinity” and is based on my simpler Infinity pattern. I have been wanting to expand my bracelet selection lately and adding Cube and Elegant Infinity to my collection of private patterns expands what I have available.

That’s it for now! Next I am working on earrings and will post a gallery of what I have made here. I inherited some wonderful gems, crystals and stones from Jay’s sister and am excited to incorporate them into my work for one-of-a-kind creations you won’t find anywhere else!

New work for sale! I’ve been busy.

Wave bracelet

I recently finished some of my raw lace into jewelry and listed it for sale on Etsy. Above is my new design Halo Wave. The curved bracelet can be worn with the arch facing you or facing away from you. It’s a nice flexible design made from the highest quality cotton tatting cordonnet. Black, charcoal and silver strands of Halo Wave are connected together and hand beaded with silver glass pearls and gunmetal silver-lined Czech glass seed beads.

I also finished 3 new Cocktail rings. Aster in white with yellow Aurora Borealis coated glass beads and a large AB crystal is a new ring design. Aurora Borealis coating adds a beautiful mutilcolor shine to glass beads. It is a double layered cup flower that is small and cute. Mounted permanently on an adjustable base it will fit anyone as all of my Cocktail Rings do.

Two new Flair Cocktail Rings were also finished, one in variegated shades of off white and another in black. The white ring was made from a lightly variegated thread called “mocha latte” and is beaded with cream colored seeds around the edges. Swarovski crystal pearls in white are hand beaded through the rings of the design with a large one for the center. It is mounted permanently on a silver tone adjustable base. The black version has pewter fringe beads tatted around the edge and is embellished with hematite tubes and a blue Czech glass bead center. Mounted on a gunmetal colored adjustable base it is perfect for everyday wear or for you best little black dress.

Two new ready to ship pins are available now as well. The popular Diana 3D stickpin was made in Azalea pink with fine silver lined Czech glass beading in the wingtips. A large pink Swarovski crystal pearl adorns the center. The stickpin she is mounted on is Sterling Silver and 2.75″ long. She is perfect for a jacket, collar, hat, scarf or to add an interesting pop of color to whatever you are wearing. I have a purple Diana stickpin that I frequently wear on my small button up sweaters. She stays 3D forever. I made a new PIXIE butterfly pin too. In heavy weight white tatting cordonnet, I beaded around her entire wings with lavender matte glass beads. The process is tedious as I bring one bead at a time into the lace as the knots are tied. She has a small Swarovski crystal pearl in her center, is stiffened to remain 3D, and is mounted on a small tie tac style gold pin base. Both are fun little flourishes!

Another new design has come to Snappy Tatter-land! Empress is a gorgeous ornate shuttle-tatted cuff that is available in black. I made an orange one for myself too. I wrote about it in yesterday’s post “I forgot the pattern :p”. 35 overlapping rings make the scalloped center. There are 3 more rounds of tatting that are very fine and interesting. You won’t find anything like this anywhere else because I have the secret pattern now. 🙂 Durable, elegant and detailed, it is worthy of royalty!

I am having a great time settling into my new HUGE studio and creating new works again. There is still a lot to do with the house, like hanging pictures and unpacking some non-essential boxes, but we are happy here. The weather is sooooooo much better than Idaho. We don’t go straight from summer to winter and back. Lol. I love having four seasons again. It is warmer here than where I grew up in PA and the growing season is longer. This is great for Jay who is ready to plant his garden! He already has starts of cucumbers, melons and lots of corn. We will be up to our ears in veggies. The guinea piggies will be happy!

I have been struggling with my chronic clusters again but I found a very sympathetic and knowledgeable Neurologist here that understands my plight. He supports my current regimen of shots, oxygen and pills to control attacks and I am truly grateful for that. Outside of working in my new studio, caring for my guinea pigs and doing my nails all the time, I have taken up playing the flute again. I used to play in high school and thought I might enjoy it again. I was right. I am zooming through my beginner’s book and practicing almost daily. Jay gets short concerts on Sundays. He is happy that I am happy.

You can look forward to more new work soon and posts about my life here in our new home.

In the meantime, you can use “SHOPSNAPPYTATTER” as a coupon code for 10% off your purchase in my Etsy shop!

Have a blessed day!
