New work for the Arts on the Riverwalk Festival!

Hello Peeps. I will have to keep my chatting to a minimum because there is so much work waiting for me upstairs. I thought I would drop in and share a few new items that are going to the New Castle Arts on the Riverwalk Festival on July 11th and 12th. Everything that is ready made in my Etsy shop, Snappy Tatter, will be going with me as well. Here is a gallery of new items that are packed and ready to go!

~Infinity Cuff~

Always a fan fave, this version is made in dark charcoal cordonnet and embellished with turquoise colored glass, Sterling spacers and silver-lined gunmetal Czech pressed glass.

P1170242

~Midnight Rhapsody~

A new dramatic Couture collar that is embellished with Czech glass in shades of blue and black and has a medallion in cobalt blue and black. It is 18″ long and ruffles elegantly around your neck.

~Indulgence~

Originally made in navy and mocha for my mother, I re-visited the pattern creating all white lace this time. The beading is perfect Swarovski crystal pearls and silver-lined clear Czech glass. Sterling accents and picot edged ribbon add to the elegance of this design.

P1170251

P1170260

~Pink Sweetie Mini Box~

I will come up with an adorable name for this small box that is a little less than 2″ across. The components are a Daisy, PIXIE butterfly and an Aspen leaf that are embellished with Mill Hill beads and Swarovski Crystal Pearls in silver and white. The garden is mounted on a softly colored damask upholstery fabric and trimmed with handmade cable with a metallic thread running through it. All of my small boxes are lined with matching felt. Everything but the metal box is handmade in these little fiber art designs.

~The Rosebud Blackwork Box~

A 3″x3″ metal box that is fully lined with deep red felt. The components are a Victorian Red Rosebud with a frilly center that surrounds a large Swarovski Crystal Pearl, evergreen Holly leaves and Blackwork embroidery of original design embellished with more pearls. Mounted on Damask Aida cloth that has a brilliant shine, this contemporary design is completely handmade, as well.

Hope you enjoyed the gallery. I’m off to finish more work which I will post soon.

Newest addition to the Garden Watch collection!

I recently bought several bold watch faces to work with. This is my newest one-of-a-kind design, Garden Watch VI. It began like this before everything was sewn together and finished into a professional J Kohr Couture design.

P1160947

I photo my work before and after. The before photo gives me a reference of where I want to put the components before they are permanently secured so I can avoid any Oops.

P1160962

For this watch I shuttle-tatted a simple double row of large rings in cream. I’ve learned that the base tatting does not need to be too ornate because it will be covered with flowers, leaves, vines and butterflies. I edge the tatting with a heavier cordonnet in olive and fudge brown working 3mm light copper colored Czech glass beads into the edge. The base tatting for this design is very firm and measures about 5.5″ long. I’ve learned to make my watches and bracelets shorter to accommodate small wrists because chain can be used for length but you cannot easily remove tatting to shorten it.

P1160968

I had a design in mind when I worked this lace and it developed perfectly. I wanted warm colors and earthy tones so I used cream, olive, fudge brown and dark Terra Cotta red. The beading is all Czech glass, a pressed glass with exceptional quality. I use Czech glass frequently for its consistency in size, shape and coloring. The large rounds and small round edge beads are Preciosa Czech glass in copper luster. The seeds and fringe beads are shades of dark gold, olive and pewter with a few that are emerald green or a little purple for interest.

P1160971

The leaves are a pattern I call Aspen. I name all of my leaf patterns by the shape of a real leaf that they mimic. Sometimes I have a leaf shape in mind before I design it as with Maple, Oak and Dandelion. And sometimes I look for the leaf name (with Google search) after the design has been made as in Birch and Aspen. The small leaves are simple one ring “Teeny Tats” with beads around the edges. The Teeny Tat flowers are both beaded and un-beaded and consist of one or two rings.

One large flower overlaps the watch face. It is a small, many-petaled flower that I have named Aster and is a new design. Edged in glass with a large round in its center, it is a firm design that was permanently adhered to the face.

P1160974

All of the tatting in this design except on small leaf is tacked down to prevent pop up. I wanted a clean and firm design. There is olive green organdy ribbon running through the band adding shimmer and contrast between the tatting and the cream grosgrain ribbon everything is mounted on. The tatting is handsewn to the ribbon and the ends are finished with metal ribbon ends that have a great olive color. I added a swivel clasp for ease when clasping the watch and a 2.5″ Sterling Silver chain so this watch will comfortably fit most wrists from 6.25″ to 8.5″.

P1160970

The steel plated Quartz face was lightly buffed to removed the shiny shininess and reveal a little of the warm copper underneath. The back is accessible to change the battery but I place a brand new battery in my watch faces so hopefully this will not be needed for a long time. The Garden Watch VI is available in my Etsy shop, Snappy Tatter, now.  My next watch is already in the works and the style is more of a modern cuff. This is the raw lace which took several hours to design and shuttle-tat.

P1160986

The face for this one is a bold rectangle design. Hopefully I will have it finished by the end of next week. We’ll see. It’s always so busy in Snappy Tatter-land!

Sunflowers popping up everywhere!

~SUNFLOWERS!~

I recently received a request in my shop, Snappy Tatter, for matching earrings for my Sunflower pendant. Fun! I was able to make my Dainty design into little Sunflowers with more frilly picots and the perfect beading. In the process I created a larger Sunflower that I turned into a bracelet. It was my first attempt to make an earring but was larger than I wanted and the beading wasn’t quite right to match the pendant. It is my first time using the metal bracelet blanks I bought awhile ago. I really like the result. The flower is stiffened for structure and attached to the blank with an industrial resin. Here is the result, peeps!

The metal cuff is one-of-a-kind, so snap it up if you like it! Here are the links to the Sunflower listings that are in my shop:

The Big “Name that Flower” Give-away!

Hello Peeps! I’ve missed you all so now it’s give-away time!

While I have been “taking it easy”, I have created a new flower. Yay! As most of you know or have realized by now, I love designing flowers and flora and their associated fauna, (mostly insects) and this one needs a name. This give-away is easy to enter and fun to boot! The question is: what flower does this design remind you of?  This flower is circular with many overlapping petals and could be considered a little trumpeted. Think 3-D, pop-up and large. Think of the flowers in your gardens that are big and showy. If you are not a gardener, botanist or floral decorator, 😉  share this contest with your friends and family and see what they come up with for flower names. Many of you are international Snappy Tatter fans or from different parts of the US than western Pennsylvania so think of flowers that are native to your area. I am eager to see what you have out there!

P1140051

Here are the “Name that Flower” Give-away rules:

~Send me your flower name that you think best represents this design. If you can find a link to a great picture that would be very helpful. I would like a common name, not a Latin name (unless there is only a Latin name, in which case I will come up with a nickname).

~The winner will be the person whose flower name I have chosen.

~In the event that more than one person has entered the same name, I will award the prize to the person who FIRST sent in the name. Thank goodness everything is time stamped these days! It could be down to seconds, ladies!

~You may enter more than one name. Entering the same name more than one time will not increase your chances, it will just take up your precious time.

~I have patterns for a Mum, Dandelion, Marigold, Rose, Lily, Pansy, and Daisy so those names cannot be entered.

~Enter by posting a commenting below or on this post on Facebook or you can send me a Tweet or what is now becoming sooooo yesterday…you can actually send me an email at jjskohr@embarqmail.com.

The Prize? How about a custom Flower Bobby for yourself! Yay!

Here are more photos for you to use as a reference:

You will be the first kid on the block to be wearing this exclusive Snappy Tatter design and you can have it in your favorite colors. It pops up just a little so you can nestle it sweetly in your hair. The flower measures 2″ across and has a decorative glass pearl at its center. I have silver bobbies with white, pink, cream and silver pearls. The metal bobby pin measures 1.50″ long and is short enough to embellish shorter hair. These are the colors of cordonnet the winner can choose from for their bobby so you can start thinking about what you will choose!

var_size20numbers

Keep it for yourself or give it to someone special. It will come in a gift box wrapped in lovely Snappy Tatter floral paper with a red ribbon accent.

The black and silver bobby shown is for me but I will make one to go in my shop soon. I will time myself now that I have the pattern so I can get an accurate price. I am thinking the price will be between $28-$35 but don’t hold me to that. It takes a lot of time to work out a pattern and this may not take as much time as I think now that I have the numbers to go by. And no, I am not selling the pattern. Sorry ladies, maybe later this year!

This Give-away will end at noon (12 pm EST) July 31st and the winner will be announced shortly after. The newly named flower bobby will ship in 2-3 weeks!

Fit for a bridal party!

Every spring I start working for brides again. It is just the time of year that I get contacted to custom make bridal jewelry. I am always flattered by these requests and am so happy that my work can be a part of their special day. The latest work I have done is shown below. Five MOD cuffs in a lightly variegated cord called cafe latte and ecru. Each has hand sewn glass beading; light bronze pearls and clear Czech glass with an Aurora Borealis coating that creates a subtle rainbow shimmer. It is a sturdy design that can stand on its own. It is one of the first I altered into jewelry and the only one I sell that I adapted from a vintage pattern. The jewelry components are Sterling including the magnetic clasps.  P1120779

You can find more of this design and new variations in earrings, chokers, and pendants in my Etsy shop, Snappy Tatter. Just put “MOD” in the shop search bar and all current listings will pop up! Cheers!

Gone but not forgotten…Snappy Tatter buying trends

The art shows and holiday bazaars are over folks. It was hectic and exhausting but well worth the time and effort. I met many new people and was able to show them a different type of artistry, fiber art and tatted lace. Many people I met had never seen this type of work and were curious as to what a fiber artist does. I was able to give small demonstrations and talk about the tools and cords I use and how I came to be a fiber artist years ago.  It is simply the medium I use now instead of pen and paper although I still draw to draft new ideas.

Anyhoo-this post is about some of my favorite work that is now in the hands of some Snappy Tatter fan somewhere beginning with one of my favorite Snappy Couture pieces that was actually purchased by my sister-in-law, Jen.

I can’t believe how lovely this looks on her. It certainly did not look this nice on me. I am so glad that someone has it that it seems such a perfect fit for.

Many items have sold but these are a few of my favorite things. As the year winds down I am still busy tatting the days away fulfilling orders for Christmas. And I am thinking ahead for how I would like to spend my time at the beginning of the new year when everything settles down and I have more time to do whatever I want. I have some new plans that I will share later.

Etsy has begun to provide some new options for shop owner’s that I will have the time to take advantage of in the new year. For example, I can now have multiple quantities available in one listing. I also can provide various options for my simpler work such as color and size options. You can now pick the color and size from drop down menus as you purchase. Etsy is getting better and better at providing a venue that is competitive with other online shopping options but still is primarily a handmade marketplace. The options of accepting credit cards directly, having gift cards available and better search variances are creating a more professional environment for buyers and sellers alike.

In the new year I will be reviewing all 200+ listings as I usually do. I will be checking for discrepancies and updating photography and listing information. I will also be taking advantage of the variations options for my Made to Order work. I am doing that now in a few of my listings where you can choose cord or bead color and length. Going through each listing one by one is a time consuming process that I save for the (generally) quietest months of the year, February and March. This is very important to me. I am a nut for consistency and professionalism in my listings. So I look for poor photos, inaccurate spelling or grammar and update links that may go nowhere and correct as much as possible.

In the meantime, I still have Free Priority Mail upgrade for all domestic orders $20 or over until 12/20. And a $5 gift certificate to my shop is included in all December sales. I have to evaluate all Made to Order purchases on a case by case basis because of my current workload. Ready to ship items will ship in time for Christmas at this point.

Enjoy your day everyone!

Jennifer
