Shop Snappy Tatter at Snappy Tatter!

It’s happening! My shop is filling up with all kinds of goodies so far. My entire collection of J Kohr Couture jewelry, earrings and two new jewelry sets can be found here now. This shop will fill with items that are ready to ship and easy to purchase. Just put it in your cart and hit the pay button and it will be on it’s way.

I have been with the Etsy platform for over 10 years now and there were times when working with them was so easy and fair in the beginning. It was a ready made platform that was simple to understand for someone like me that is NOT a computer nut. I happily hummed along in my little shop learning the ins and outs of what makes an Etsy shop successful. Then Etsy began to change some of the game including their fees and how and who is advertised where. With hundreds of thousands of sellers at their disposal they can make changes that make it hard for established sellers like me to decide to move or to just adjust. I know it has caused some to move on and find other online venues. I have stuck with them but after realizing that Etsy is advertising other tatter’s and other seller’s work in my shop pages…I am going to limit my use and hopefully completely expand to being here over time.

Rush earrings in mint with silver-lined glass beads

You can purchase from Snappy Tatter-land easily. Notice the restructuring of the menu at the top. Directly under the banner is a menu for items that are already made and ready to ship. You will also see that the pricing is a little different. That is because I do not get nickel-and-dimed with fees here on my own website so pricing can be a little lower. YAY!!!! There is little I like about having to raise my prices to meet excessive fees. Shipping will also be a flat rate of $4.50 for the US no matter how many items you buy and a flat $12.50 everywhere else. I will probably re-evaluate that later to make sure I can afford to give such reasonable shipping charges like any shop owner would but for now…simple is what I am striving for.

Bubbles the Fish Pendant in J Kohr Couture

This is all a very exciting part of my journey as an artist. All kinds of thoughts are swirling around of what I want to offer and how. Now I feel like I am my own shop-owner and not a member of someone else’s giant international bazaar. And things are working in my favor. I truly believe that when things are meant to go the way you are headed, there is an ease about it. Problem solving has few blockades and things just…work. So far, setting up listings and advertising, social media and a handful of behind the scenes things has happened with exactly the ease I speak of. I am grateful for that and hope it continues to be simple.

Heart String Couture necklace and Valentine earrings

Here you will find ready made jewelry, snow and snow covered satin ornaments, small works of fiber art, including the boxes and framed works, stationery that has been hand drawn and embellished with tatting and more. I believe I can also offer digital works for sale so my printable Mandalas may move here as well. My paintings and drawings will remain with www.jennifer-kohr.pixels.com. unless I decide to start offering prints here. That’s down the road. See? The wheels are turning like it has a hamster in it that drank a pot of coffee.

Dainty earrings with silver Swarovski Crystal Pearls

Ultimately the plan is simple…(muttering…simple, she says)…but this is my idea for the time being. Here in Snappy Tatter-land you will be able to purchase ready made items that will ship within a couple of business days. Those items are also remaining in my Etsy shop (at a slightly higher price) until I feel comfortable emptying the shop EXCEPT for Made to Order items (MTO’s). Those items will remain in Etsy because of the ease of choosing the variations you want for custom work. You don’t even have to talk to me…you can just make selections there and I will fulfill your request and ship it so it is very easy to use. Here I do not quite have that same option. As I create new creations they will come here only but I will remain with Etsy and I will continue to advertise there (and get lost in a sea of other advertisers). I will let you know if there are changes in this idea.

So, for now, shop for J Kohr Couture, earrings and jewelry sets by clicking the menu at the top under my banner. Please let me know in the comments if you are interested in custom work or bridal work. You can also always reach me at jjskohr@gmail.com.

In the works right now…more Rose jewelry, more tatterpillars and up next Bracelets and Cuffs will be added to the sales menus.

Have a lovely evening everyone!

Yay! Buy direct from Snappy Tatter!

I upgraded my website awhile ago so that my customers and readers would be able to purchase my work directly from me through PayPal. I am not a techy person and often struggle for hours to figure out how to do something simple…or supposedly simple. I am just an artist, after all. Lol. I read and re-read the tutorials for how to set up payment on this website and over and over it was a difficult task. Why weren’t the options showing up that they were promising were there??? Luckily, I am rather mellow this evening and felt like taking on the task. I finally figured it out and will be adding “buy” buttons to eligible items in the galleries. I also will add “buy” buttons when new items are showcased. If you have any questions, I MAY have an answer. For now I have a few kinks to work out and then I will begin with my Couture collection, adding the latest works and “buy” buttons so you no longer have to run around the internet to find my shop to purchase things.

In the meantime…pop on over to the Watch Gallery. The watch shown above is for sale and now you can buy it straight from me with ALWAYS FREE SHIPPING!!! Who doesn’t love that!

Dreamer

dreamercopyrightSnappy Tatter shop listing: https://www.etsy.com/listing/217104312

I happy to introduce one of my latest fiber art designs, Dreamer. The original thought in my mind was different than the outcome, which frequently happens in my work as it evolves. The conception changes as I work with the colors and texture. I change my decisions as to where it is going based on what I am feeling and seeing. My palette of colors was chosen and the linen pressed and stretched to a frame creating a canvas for me to work on. The colors were grouped in families; warm grays, browns, mauve, grapes, reds, oranges, and a family of contrasts in chartreuse. I used what is available here from my huge stock of threads, mostly cotton floss but also pearl cotton, rayon and metallic threads. All the thread was cut into usable lengths and tied to cards for organization. All the skeins of thread were kept in small packages that were secured to a large ring. The organization it takes to start any of my projects usually takes a couple of hours itself.

This embroidery began with a drawing of the face in graphite. The face I drew was shortened as I stitched and the expression slightly altered to convey more contentment and appear more realistic.

IMAG0228

I started to take progress photos of the stitching of the “hair” after the face was completed. I worked on this for an hour or two at a time. Every time I stepped away I saw how the colors needed worked and re-worked to create a blended effect. There are approximately 34 colors in this work. I have to use my threads to blend much as a painter blends their paint. Shades, tones and tints. The process was interesting for me. I have never created something like this before. It was neat to continually add more color, more depth to the design. The slide show below shows some of the progression of stitching. The colors are off because I took the photos under various lighting with my camera or phone.

The result of my stitching and stitching was heavy layers of the cotton floss and the design became raised from the linen. Incredible texture was created due to the process I was using to paint the linen; Add a new color, work it into the previous layer, add low lights, work the previous layer into the new one and add highlights, repeat. Hours went by. The images in the slide show below show the depth and texture of Dreamer.

After the hair was completed…or more accurately, I stopped nitpicking and reworking the design, I added the chartreuse to the spaces between the curls making my choice of colors “pop” even more vibrantly. In the final hours of work, I added pearl cotton, rayon and metallic threads for spark throughout the hair. But the icing on the cake was the brilliant Swarovski crystals that were added and the tiny little pop-up PIXIE butterflies that flutter about the curls. The PIXIEs are shuttle tatted with the finest cordonnet and wee silver-lined glass beads are tatted into the wings. The are hand sewn in and stiffened to remain 3-D. I created a swirl of shimmer radiating from the face to the tips of the flaming hair. In the next set of detail pics you can see the raised butterflies, Swarovski crystals and the chartreuse that peeks through the curls.

I framed the work myself. I chose a simple silver metal frame and double mat in white and an ivory that matches the linen.

P1180778finalDreamer is now available for sale in my Etsy shop, Snappy Tatter. You can find the listing and full description here. I am also joining another venue called fineartamerica to sell prints of this and other embroideries. When I have my account up and running, I will post here so you can stop by and tell me what you think! I hope you enjoyed learning a little more about what a Snappy Tatter does when she is not tatting! Comments are encouraged!

My life 2.0

P1200421

All of you know it takes a lot to draw me away from what makes me…me. A life of lace-making, designing, drawing and exploring the natural world. I found out what it takes to do that last year. I have always shared small details of my personal life so you can get to know me beyond being an artist. It almost feels like an obligation, albeit minor, to explain where I went, why I haven’t been here and why I am back. I think mostly because from here on I want to share my new life with you and my new life is very different now. Without a simple explanation it may actually seem like I was abducted by aliens and plopped back down on the planet a year later in a different life altogether. That is not a distant analogy.

Here is the short and simple answer for my absence…I was divorced at the beginning of the year. At the end of the year, I moved my fur babies and Snappy Tatter 2300 miles away to a cabin on a mountaintop in Washington to live with my sweetheart. So life seemed to be stagnant, move forward extremely fast, screeched to a halt, take an about-face and fly the other direction until it just started to cruise along comfortably again. And here I am.

I have still worked, I have still drawn and done some minor things to keep busy. I have taken lots of photographs to fill my beloved “inspiration” folder on my computer. I have kept my eyes open and my mind ready. But in order to keep my internal scales balanced I had to move some things around. Snappy Tatter as a business stopped in time. I had to be okay with that. My business is not what makes me thrive…my art makes me thrive. And that stays with me in the workings of my mind even when it is not being expressed.

Snappy Tatter is back. I am back. As all the repercussions of my relatively simple divorce fell into place I realized for the first time in my years…I can go ANYWHERE.

There is a meme online that says something like…she thought she could, so she did. That was my life last year. The man I fell in love with was miles from me in an opposite kind of life that I was in. I was in the greater Pittsburgh area…very metropolitan, full of culture and easy access to everything you can think of from every ethnic restaurant to healthcare. He was on a small mountain on the border of Canada in northeast Washington living a simplified, rustic life that required hard work and was about a half hour from the smallest of towns. Our connection was, you guessed it, the internet, the phone, Skype, texting.

When we couldn’t bear to be apart any longer, he came to be with me in PA while I searched for a new home in the countryside. I kept coming up empty with options as time was ticking away inside a house I had up for sale. SHE THOUGHT SHE COULD, SO SHE DID. I moved. Away from the state I grew up in to here…a place I could only dream of being.

My Life 2.0

Snappy Tatter is open again. I have a small area to work in with my drafting table and desk. I am still sorting through alllllll of my threads, findings, beads, paperwork, boxes, photos, pencils, tablets…it goes on and on. Much of my “things” are stored in a room above the porch that is uninsulated so we have enough room in this A-frame cabin with our two cats, dog, and the guinea pig. Yes, I have a dog now. My life is unbelievable now. So incredibly different. I am different. I wanted you to know…I had to unravel everything a bit to knit my life back stronger and better for me.

So there will be new work galleries coming soon of what I have done over last year for a handful of faithful customers (thank you for your patience, Heidi). There will be photos of my new work space, maybe a few of the lazy furbabies, this wee cabin, a couple of my Love including a drawing of his handsome face, and many of the vast acres upon acres of God’s land I am now blessed to live in. Life has changed…so will Snappy Tatter. That is truly what it means to be an artist…as life changes…so does the work. And how you feel about it. Welcome everyone, into my new life.

New ideas are popping up in my head all the time so hopefully I will have some new designs listed soon. I thought, since snow is falling outside my window today, I would take the time to showcase all of the Flakes I have available for custom tatting. I also have a couple of Ice Crystals and Snowballs available too. Visit this shop section, Tatted Ornaments, to find both the made to order and read to ship ornaments that are currently ready for this season.

More J Kohr Couture watches…wearable and functional fiber art.

I have truly enjoyed making watches over the past year and a half. Sweet, functional time pieces of wearable fiber art, all have been decadent tributes to nature with the exception of Watch V, which is my own contemporary cuff. You can find photos all of the watches I have made so far in the gallery to the left. And you can find any that are available for sale in my shop, here. Currently there are 3 for sale, IV, VII and VIII. Each one is so different with a different color scheme and varying textures. Here are photos of the 3 newest ones, the first of which has sold.

I hope to be starting another one soon. They take a considerable amount of time to tat the components and finish into the final design. A base layer of tatting is created often with beading tatted into the band. Vines, flowers, leaves and butterflies are either tatted separately and hand sewn into the band or they are tatted into the band with the watchface attached. Glass beading, crystal pearls and Swarovski elements are then added. The bands are constructed in different manners depending on each design. I use ribbon as a base so the work will not stretch over time. Frequently I brush the Stainless faces so the warm metal below shows through. It tends to make the watchface blend with the tatting better. Small parts of the design are attached to some of the faces by an industrial resin making the design more playful and like a garden. I’ve been trying to stay close to 6″ long and add a 2″ chain for a fit from 6-8″ which should fit most everyone. I hope you have enjoyed my latest watches.

Garden watches can be custom made upon request.

New earring listings in my Etsy shop!

I’ve spent the past few days listing several pairs of new earrings of my simplest design; Strand, Drips, Frilly and Flash Drips and Drops. Frequently these earrings are made from the remaining 1/2 yard of cord that is on my shuttles after finishing larger designs. Instead of cutting and throwing away the ends I tat a couple of rings and create small, elegant, earrings that are very popular in my Etsy shop, Snappy Tatter.

Earrings for the festival!

The New Castle Riverwalk Arts Festival is coming quick! I spent the last few days finishing 30 pairs of earrings. It’s a very time-consuming and tedious but earrings are a huge seller at local shows so I like to have a large variety there. I don’t have time to chat…now I am on to pendants! Hopefully I will be able to post photos of them soon. Enjoy the gallery!

And a quick FYI…my online shop, Snappy Tatter, is temporarily on vacation till the day before the show when Made to Order (MTO) listings will become available. I just needed more time!

Enjoy your day Peeps!

FYI… Upcoming Arts Festival Information

Hi Peeps. I have been getting questions regarding the upcoming Arts Festival, Arts on the Riverwalk. This is an annual juried arts festival, meaning artists and artisans are screened before they are accepted. I did not attend last year but was present the previous two years and it is an event that is worth traveling for. There are local artists and artisans from every field including photography, pottery, jewelry, clothing, painting and drawing and of course, fiber arts (that’s me) and many more categories. There is lots of food, activities for the children, street performers and music all day. The dates and times for the artist’s marketplace are July 11th, 4pm-8pm and 12th, 11am-8pm. The event is located in downtown New Castle at the Riverplex. The New Castle Artfest has been renamed and combined with the annual fireworks display this year so it will be loud and sparkly too. You can find more information on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ArtsOnTheRiverwalk

Visit my online shop, http://www.snappytatter.etsy.com to see what will be available at the festival. All work that is MTO (made to order) will remain available in my shop over the weekend. All ready made work listings will be deactivated and taken with me.

I hope to see you there!
