New and only made this one time! Small heavily beaded snowflakes suspended invisibly inside crystal clear ornaments for your tree! This labor of love was delightful and not without it’s trials as I worked to get exactly what I wanted.
Then I beaded it something like this: I added beads as I tatted and hand-sewed them in after the flake was finished as well. Below is one of my Cocktail Rings that has been sold and a good example of the amount of beading involved in each snowflake.
I used Czech seed beads in Silver-lined clear and gold, and clear with Aurora Borealis coating that gives a multi-color shimmer, Mill Hill seeds that were opaque white, pale transparent green and translucent periwinkle blue. I also used fringe beads that are tear drop shaped. I hand-sewed these beads into the lace on both sides so there is little difference as it rotates inside the ornament. For center beads I used Swarovski crystal pearls, crystal clear and wonderfully faceted Celestial Crystals with and without Aurora Borealis coating and faceted and smooth Rondelles in green, blue, gold and clear.
The result is shimmery, sparkling, brilliant snowflakes inside seamless glass balls! The actual glass ornaments are well made and do not have a fragile feel about them, at all. I had to “man handle” them quite a bit to get the flakes inside. Lol.
Have cats? Have wee kids? I have ornaments much more delicate than this and I hang them high (of course) but also hang them from the ends of curtain rods and seldom used fan pulls or light shades. Just a few ideas. These are being sold as a set so they will come safely in the packaging of the glass balls. If I ever find another set of glass that is so seamless (and affordable), I may make another set but until then, these will be one-of-a-kind. Let me know if you have questions or would like more photos!
As winter comes to a close, I start to think about spring blooms and blossoms. I look for the Daffodil shoots, Forsythia buds and tiny crocuses that are always the first to bloom. But I still am making snow for customers all year long. I just enjoy it more when it is 70 and sunny out. Ha ha. Here are some of the satin ornaments that are for sale and ready to ship in my Etsy shop, Snappy Tatter:
It’s that time of year folks. There is snow flurrying outside my western Pennsylvania home as I write this! I have 10 Ornament styles that are custom made in my shop now. I plan to have more soon. The following Snappy Tatter designs can be made in two different sizes and several colors. Click each flake picture to be taken to my Etsy shop listing with more pictures and full descriptions including available sizes and colors.
All of these designs are listed with a quantity of 3 most of the time. Larger quantities can be made but will take additional time, just ask. New ideas are popping up in my head all the time so hopefully I will have some new designs listed soon. I thought, since snow is falling outside my window today, I would take the time to showcase all of the Flakes I have available for custom tatting. I also have a couple of Ice Crystals and Snowballs available too. Visit this shop section, Tatted Ornaments, to find both the made to order and read to ship ornaments that are currently ready for this season.
Lately I have been working with a lot of white. What normally happens in Snappy Tatter-land is that I will tat items over several days and store them individually in small bags until I am ready to finish them. I am usually working on one large project and several small pieces are made when I need a break or have limited time. Usually these items are worked in the different colors of thread that is already on my 12+ shuttles to use up the remaining thread. Everything goes to my studio and is stored in trays.
I remove the contents of the bags one by one and sew beading into the tatting, hide the tails and add stiffener if needed. Then jewelry is finished by adding bails, chains and clasps, earring findings or bracelet ends. Some items are mounted on cocktail ring, barrette, bobby pin or brooch bases with industrial glue and left to rest and cure for at least two days.
Fiber art elements remain bagged until I they are needed for a small box, embroidery or a framed design. Time spent making small designs that will be used later is recorded in a small journal or added on a small piece of paper to the bag so my pricing is accurate.
I think I had a lot of white on my shuttles from the tatting blizzard of 2013. (This blizzard starts every year around October and ends the second week of December as everyone scrambles to order Snappy Tatter snow for their gifts and tree). So several white items were recently listed in my shop including a new design called, Little Guardian Angel.
I actually created this design last year and wear a pendant that is charcoal and black.
I have been blessed to have had several angels in my life that have helped me through some very difficult times. I believe everyone has angels that assist them when life gets unbearable or things seem insurmountable. Sometimes we don’t realize they were there until the dust has settled. Some people don’t ever realize they are there. These are just my feelings. I seem to have morphed into a spiritual person the last year and a half. A beautiful thing to me, as I have grown to be a stronger woman than I was before.
The first Little Guardian Angel sold within hours of being listed in my shop, the medium one with the Aurora Borealis beading. The smaller one made in fine size 80 cordonnet is still available. You can find the listing in Snappy Tatter with more photos and a full description here. Both angels are embellished with a Swarovski Crystal pearl, a pewter bail, picot edged ribbon and a floral box clasp. I can make these angels in a variety of 37 different colors.
I also created two new pendants: a super large Flair with a glass pearl center and a Dainty with silver-lined Czech glass beading and a large Swarovski Crystal pearl center. You can click the links above to find more pics and descriptions.

By this time of year, I have created a lot of white items to fill customer’s orders, I still have a lot of white on my shuttles and there is a blanket of white outside my western Pennsylvania home. So in January I get excited about working with color again and had a wonderful opportunity to do so while I created a Garden Watch for super fan Heidi O!
I am still cheered by the colorful Christmas tree that I refuse to take down. 😀
No more white for awhile! I will be posting about the new Garden Watch soon!
I have been working through this fall to list my own snowflake patterns in my Etsy shop, Snappy Tatter. All together I believe I have 17 patterns. One by one I have been tatting, stiffening and taking photos of these new flakes and listing them. I have made them plain. (Beaded snowflakes are one-of-a-kind and called “Ice Crystals”.) And they have options of being tatted in two sizes in several different colors. These new flakes are replacing the tatted flakes of another designer that I have been making. I feel it is more appropriate for me to have everything in my shop be my own original styles and patterns at this point. I began tatting other people’s patterns years ago and that is how I became proficient in the art. But now I have been designing ace for half a decade and I am proud that my little business has flourished on that basis. Here is the latest snowflake that can be found in my shop and the link to the listing as well.
All of my new snowflakes come in 1 or 2 sizes and can be made in 10 colors. The quantity listed is up to 3 but I can make more upon request. I am keeping the quantity low so that crazy people that want to deck out their entire tree can’t order 100 of them and I end up tatting snow for 3 months. 🙂
This is where I will be this coming weekend peeps! All work that is available in my shop that is not Made to Order will be there with me. So you can actually see it in 3-D reality and touch it too. And if you really like it you can take it home with you for the fee on the tag plus a little tax so the misers of the State can get their share. 😀 All Made to order listings will remain in my shop and be available to purchase through the event. Ready made items will not be available online from Friday to some time on Sunday after I recuperate from all the excitement.
And I have great news: I will be able to take credit cards on the spot thanks to Intuit’s GoPayment app! Yahoo! I hope to see my local peeps there. And if you are the adventurous type and would like to come for the event, I can recommend a nice hotel for you to stay in. Happy Holiday shopping you crazy people!
The art shows and holiday bazaars are over folks. It was hectic and exhausting but well worth the time and effort. I met many new people and was able to show them a different type of artistry, fiber art and tatted lace. Many people I met had never seen this type of work and were curious as to what a fiber artist does. I was able to give small demonstrations and talk about the tools and cords I use and how I came to be a fiber artist years ago. It is simply the medium I use now instead of pen and paper although I still draw to draft new ideas.
Anyhoo-this post is about some of my favorite work that is now in the hands of some Snappy Tatter fan somewhere beginning with one of my favorite Snappy Couture pieces that was actually purchased by my sister-in-law, Jen.
I can’t believe how lovely this looks on her. It certainly did not look this nice on me. I am so glad that someone has it that it seems such a perfect fit for.
Isn’t she pretty! Thank you Jen. Here is your 15 minutes of fame.
Just perfect for her!
Another Snappy Couture design that is gone is the Maple Gala:
And here are other items that are treasured one-of-a-kind work that will not return to my shop:
Splendor with Hematite pendant
Gold Vivien Stickpin
Darla Butterfly Box
And now some work that may be reproduced in a similar way sometime:
Flourish with red jade beads
Grace earrings with Swarovski pearls
Strand with Howlite
Dainty Flakes with CZ’s
MOD II pendant with Czech glass
Many items have sold but these are a few of my favorite things. As the year winds down I am still busy tatting the days away fulfilling orders for Christmas. And I am thinking ahead for how I would like to spend my time at the beginning of the new year when everything settles down and I have more time to do whatever I want. I have some new plans that I will share later.
Etsy has begun to provide some new options for shop owner’s that I will have the time to take advantage of in the new year. For example, I can now have multiple quantities available in one listing. I also can provide various options for my simpler work such as color and size options. You can now pick the color and size from drop down menus as you purchase. Etsy is getting better and better at providing a venue that is competitive with other online shopping options but still is primarily a handmade marketplace. The options of accepting credit cards directly, having gift cards available and better search variances are creating a more professional environment for buyers and sellers alike.
In the new year I will be reviewing all 200+ listings as I usually do. I will be checking for discrepancies and updating photography and listing information. I will also be taking advantage of the variations options for my Made to Order work. I am doing that now in a few of my listings where you can choose cord or bead color and length. Going through each listing one by one is a time consuming process that I save for the (generally) quietest months of the year, February and March. This is very important to me. I am a nut for consistency and professionalism in my listings. So I look for poor photos, inaccurate spelling or grammar and update links that may go nowhere and correct as much as possible.
In the meantime, I still have Free Priority Mail upgrade for all domestic orders $20 or over until 12/20. And a $5 gift certificate to my shop is included in all December sales. I have to evaluate all Made to Order purchases on a case by case basis because of my current workload. Ready to ship items will ship in time for Christmas at this point.

Snappy Tatter Snow! In keeping with my Ice Crystal tradition, I embellished each Flake with exceptional one-of-a-kind glamor using Swarovski, Celestial and Czech crystals, glass beads and pearls and perfect Swarovski pearls in icy shades and Christmas colors. AB (Aurora Borealis) coating adds a brilliant multicolor shimmer to many of the glass beads.
These are Snappy Tatter original designs. The Ice Crystals and Snowballs I hand make each year are one-of-a-kind and limited edition, perfect for collecting and gift-giving!
Tatting is a knotted lace technique that is closest to micro-macrame. Hundreds and sometimes thousands of tiny knots are tied to form rings and chains. Beads are added one by one as the knots are tied or hand sewn into the finished Flake.
