A study of the heart

I decided I wanted to design some shuttle-tatted hearts for earrings and pendants. This was right after I designed my latest bracelet pattern that I call Galaxy, which is made using an onion ring technique. I made 3 Galaxy bracelets all in various variegated cordonnet. They are available in black and white, a pink to berry variation and a variegated brown to terra cotta, called spice cake. Of course, I am always happy to create any of my bracelet designs in your favorite color. And I have many variegated threads that I need to share a photo of here and in my listings.

~Galaxy~

I think my variegated threads are perfect for this design! From there I decided to design a heart with an onion ring center that I call Sweetheart. Shuttle tatted in Victorian red, they have Swarovski crystal centers.

I already have a heart design called Valentine that I created to go with a JJ Chic Couture necklace called Heart String.

Both the earrings and the necklace are available in my Etsy shop in the JJ Chic Couture section. I created two more pairs of Valentine earrings in pink and red. The pink earrings are embellished with Swarovski bicone crystals, and the red have Swarovski crystal pearls. I like them without the edge beading because they come to more of a point.

Lastly, I made a design using trefoil centers in burgundy cordonnet. These Trefoil Hearts have gorgeous garnet red colored Cubic Zirconia in the center and dangling matching beads.

This concludes my study of the heart. Simple designs with elegance and minimal embellishments, I love them all. Follow all the links to my Etsy shop to see more Snappy Tatter designs.

I will be back soon with some exciting news, so stay tuned!

We like to move it, move it!

There have been changes here at home where we welcome late spring weather, graciously. Jay has been avidly gardening a large 30′ x 30′ plot on our half acre. I have been working on a smaller flower garden and have plans to prune the overgrown honeysuckle and lilac. It is amazing how different everything looks compared to when we purchased this house and land last year around this time! The lawn is actually a green lawn! We spend a lot of times in the mountains and have purchased a small camper so we can make overnight stays comfortable.

Adorable, right? This photo is from Mosquito Flat Reservoir.

Another change in Snappy Tatter-land was the re-working of one of my Couture designs. As you know, my Couture work is one-of-a-kind, wearable, fiber art that takes hours and days to design and create. Sometimes, something I have created just doesn’t sit right with me. That is true of Flyaway Butterfly Gala. I did not like the way the center butterfly sat. It didn’t look attractive to me and I felt I could do better. So I dismantled it some time ago with the intention of reworking that center piece. FINALLY, I got to it with everything that has been going on in the last couple of years. Yes, it can take me that long to get to something now. Between moving, living, my neurological condition, and the things that make up daily life, it took me time to get back to Flyaway. But, I am grateful I did. I love what developed so much more than what it was. By now I have more butterfly patterns under my wing (so to speak) so I chose Gloria to take up the space of the butterfly I did not prefer. She is 3-D, which I love, and is a magnificent crescendo in this modern display of natural delights.

The new version of Flyaway Butterfly Gala

I love this so much more!!! In the new version of Flyaway, a Vivien Butterfly tags along at the bottom giving the bib necklace a better “plunge” look and the extra PIXIE butterfly was added at the top to attach around the neck, mirroring the other side. Instead of stabilizing the work with trimmed and sealed organza on the backside, I added flesh tone rings where stability was needed. The butterflies are more transparent and look bolder. Flyaway is available in my Etsy shop in the J Kohr Couture for sale section! I would love to hear what you have to say about the Flyaway transformation. Please feel free to comment below!

Thanks everyone for stopping into Snappy Tatter-land. Feel free to use coupon code “LOVELACE” for free domestic shipping…it’s still active for a limited time!

Upcoming ArtFest work!

The New Castle Arts festival is quickly approaching. On July 11th and 12th I will be displaying all of my work for 30,000+ people to see. The energy is always exciting but the work involved to prepare is intense. I am in the process of evaluating what I already have and what else I need to have to create a full display that showcases my abilities. As promised, I am displaying work here that will go to the festival and will not be listed in my Etsy shop, Snappy Tatter, unless it comes back with me. For newcomers that are exploring my website for the first time, all of my work is handmade, shuttle-tatted lace. I am a professional fiber artist and tatted lace designer. My patterns are original in design and embellishment.

Mark you calendars peeps and come see me! Here are a few of the designs you will see:

~NEW! The Fearless Grace Cuff~

This wide lace cuff was going to be a watch band but I fell in love with the look and decided to create a bracelet. Part of my new “Simply Lace” collection, there was no need for beads, crystals or pearls to make this design spectacular! Shuttle-tatted with black 100% Egyptian cotton cordonnet and finished with a Sterling toggle clasp, it measures 6.5″ long x 2.5″ wide.

~Pulse~

This is an older design revisited. The tatting is dense and tight. The lace is slightly raised and nearly opaque in charcoal gray. I will not be recreating this pattern in this manner again as it ended up more complicated than the original Pulse design. Because it is one-of-a-kind, it will become part of my J Kohr Couture collection. It is finished with patterned ribbon ends, a magnetic clasp and a short, gunmetal colored, security chain. It measures 7″ long x 0.75″ wide.

~Leaf Trio~

Two small Aspen leaves with a larger Birch leaf in between, this small bracelet was an experiment to see what a row of tatted leaves would look like as a bracelet. Shuttle-tatted in medium charcoal gray and embellished with pewter Czech Glass, this bracelet blends contemporary with organic design. The leaf designs are my own and were my first attempt to make realistic appearing leaves. Tweaked over time, the leaf patterns were finalized a couple of years ago. Measuring 5.75″ long and 1.25″ at its widest point, this bracelet will be perfect for a slender wrist. The jewelry components are gunmetal plated including the hook and eye clasp.

~The Debutante~

A fan favorite classic design, this version was tatted in cream cordonnet and finished with gold plated jewelry components. A single, matching, Swarovski crystal pearls drops from the center of this frilly design. Gold beads and beadcaps create an elegant look. Meant to be a choker, the Debutante measures 13″ long by 0.50″ wide and has a 2″ gold chain extension for a perfect fit. I always add a little bead at the end of the extension chain…I think it finishes the necklace perfectly. I did not take pictures of me modeling the next two necklaces…I am suffering through allergies and looked a little rough yesterday. And I am always my own model cause I work for peanuts. Ha ha!

~Halo~

One of my favorite combinations of colors is any shade of blue/green and brown. This simple necklace was tatted in fudge brown and hand-beaded in turquoise colored Howlite. Each bead has fluted or flower gunmetal beadcaps on each end and a large flat disc hangs from the center of crossed picots. I love the colors and the brown veins on the beads.

I hope you have enjoyed the gallery. I was able to spend a little more time chatting while I wait for my allergy meds to work so I can go garden on this nice day. I will be back soon with two new outstanding Couture pieces you won’t want to miss. Have a lovely day everyone!

Snappy Couture…Petite Full Bloom, the love child of Full Bloom and Aspen

Let me tell you, some of my favorite creations are in my Snappy Couture line of jewelry. One-of-a-kind, and very labor intensive, these designs allow me to let my creativity out to push the limits of lace-making. When I was a little girl I wanted to be an architect, interior designer or a clothing designer…or a zookeeper (until I found out you don’t get to just play with the animals).  To me, creating wearable works of art satisfies both the artistic designer and the analytical engineer in me, effective use of both sides of my brain!

There are over 25 different pieces of Snappy Couture all over the world. And the collection is continuously being added to. One Snappy Tatter follower requested a smaller version of the Full Bloom bouquet necklace that was more affordable for her.

I worked within her budget and was able to design a smaller rose bouquet using the same colors, smaller flowers and tighter Aspen leaves instead of the Oak that are in the original. The leaves are tatted together for a super durable base. The flowers are hand sewn into the design. I love the 3-D pop up effect of my roses! At her request, I added ivory Swarovski pearls instead of gold ones and finished the necklace with Sterling Silver jewelry components and ivory ribbon. The beading is minimal. There are only a few matte green/bronze seeds down the center veins of the leaves. Petite Full bloom is one of those designs that only needs a little embellishment because the lacework is the showstopper!

Here’s the original Full Bloom! You can cast your vote for this design and help me win an online contest here (2nd page): http://www.andthedesignwinneris.com

I will be back soon with a showcase and chat about the Garden Watch I made that didn’t even make it to my Etsy shop! A dear friend of mine snapped it up at it’s premier!

Getting to that Red Carpet!

I entered a contest for jewelry designers last week. My effort is to get my work noticed by the panel of celebrity judges to fulfill my dream of “Snappy Tatter on the Red Carpet”. I entered my Couture necklace “Full Bloom” trying to knock the socks of off, well, everybody. I also entered a small wreath pendant from 2011 thinking that since the theme is “holiday necklaces”, the Wreath may get more votes. The unfortunate part is that the voting is based on appearance alone. No one knows my work is tatting or that it is the result of tying knots for many many hours. They just see the finished piece. Turns out both of these very different designs are getting attention. Yay!

I need the help of all my supporters and followers, fans, family and peeps! The more 5 star votes I get from the general public the more likely my work will make the final judging round in front of the professional panel of designers. I could win money but more importantly, I could win recognition.

Voting is free. You do not need to sign up for anything or enter any information. Just visit http://www.andthedesignwinneris.com and click the stars on Full Bloom and the Wreath on pages 2 and 3 of the gallery.  You can only vote once for each entry. Every vote is so important. There are some beautiful designs in the galleries that I am competing with. All of you know that I put my heart and soul into my work, that my designs are original and take a considerable amount of time to create and that I am living my dream one knot at a time! I thank you all so very much for your support!

Snappy Tatter style…new Couture and snowflakes

Hi all! To say I am busy right now would be a ridiculous understatement. I am in that clerical/business management phase that I have to go through in preparation for a holiday show. Everything that has been packed away has to be brought out and evaluated: signage, table decor, displays, boxes, bags, labels, pamphlets… Today I will be mostly working on inventory and display as well as finishing about a dozen pairs of earrings. I also have made snowflakes and a garden watch and all of these items need photographed. In the meantime I wanted to share with you some of my most recent works but I don’t have much time to chat about them. I will make sure I come back and tell you more about the process and elements that went into making them after the dust settles. Enjoy!

~New, original, Snowflakes and Medallion~

That’s it for now. Time to get into that studio and start sorting it all out. I will be working late tonight and tomorrow for that matter but it is all worth it when I feel prepared and can be at my best. I can’t wait to meet new peeps and explain my work. If you are in the area, come visit! Information is in the post below. I will (hopefully) be posting more pics later of work you will see at the show.

New niece and new Snappy Couture!

First, I have to share a photo of the newest member of my family. Meet Lindi Faith, my youngest niece! Shown here with me only 9 days old. Such a tiny tiny baby and so perfect, the little one brought on that weepy delighted feeling you get when holding something so precious! lindi

Also new is my latest Snappy Couture design, Aspen Trio.  Although it is not as beautiful and precious as my niece, it deserves a shout out as well.

Aspen Trio is 3 small leaves tatted together to form a contemporary design. This is a new leaf design that I had not yet used in my work. The leaf is smaller, and more compact. I don’t like to monkey around with variegated threads much unless it is for leaves which always turn out very cool looking. I think variegation takes away from the design of tatted lace with little exception. So my multicolor threads are all in shades of greens and autumn colors. I picked up this color last year and this is my first time using it. It is called “herbal garden”. I love how all three leaves transition in almost the same manner. I added jewel tone Czech glass beading at all of the connections, overlapped the leaves and added hand sewn, olive, Swarovski Crystal pearls down the center veins. I love the end result and you can find the listing in my Etsy shop here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/165355669

On one of our camping trips this summer, I spent some time re-designing my Maple leaf pattern. I think the result is more proportionally accurate. It is modeled after an actual leaf I plucked off a nearby tree. I came home, and once again using a variegated cordonnet, created this simple Maple leaf pendant with a wood disc back, Bordeaux Swarovski crystal pearl embellishment and chocolate brown ribbon necklace. A simple tribute to my favorite season. Autumn in western Pennsylvania is stunning!

Recently I did a little work for a charity providing a Pitter Patter necklace for a raffle for the Schnauzer Rescue of the Carolinas. I also made this necklace for the Butler county Humane Society fundraiser last year. Being an animal lover, I enjoy contributing to the fundraising efforts of rescue organizations.

I made the necklace in charcoal thinking it would attract more people than straight black or white. Plus, when I think of a Schnauzer, I think of the salt and pepper “old man” appearance of their coats.

You can find the Pitter Patter listing in my Etsy shop here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/130442097

There are several colors I can make it in and if you have something specific in mind, I may be able to accommodate you. Just drop me a line. I love to do custom work. In fact, most of my work from July this year till now has been custom or bridal! Hmmm.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

🙂
